Course Overview

This Level 6 Diploma is a nationally-recognized, professional qualification aimed at managers and practitioners with specific responsibility for developing and applying occupational health and safety policies and programs in their day-to-day business operations. The content of this qualification reflects the management model in HSG65 ‘Successful Health and Safety Management’ to provide advanced knowledge on occupational health, risk management, and health and safety culture. Further, in the assessment criteria, it includes two workplace-based assignments besides written examination to enable the candidates to apply their academic knowledge to real-world situations.

Who can take Level 6 Diploma?

  • HSE professionals who have completed Level 3 or International Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health or an alternative appropriate qualification in a related sector
  • Professionals (i.e. Safety Engineers, Safety Officers, Safety Managers) who have appropriate professional experience gained through a health and safety role (*Good standard of written English is required)

Course Content

The Level 6 Diploma comprises of three mandatory units, each separately assessed:

Unit 1: Principles of Health and Safety Management

Unit 2: Safeguarding People’s Health in the Workplace

Unit 3: Promoting a Positive Health and Safety Culture in the Workplace

  • Understand how to reduce the impact of workplace activities on the environment.
  • Understand how an occupational health strategy integrates with an effective health and safety management system.
  • Understand how occupational health hazards affect people.
  • Know the current statutory requirements for occupational health.
  • Understand how to identify and evaluate occupational health hazards and risks.
  • Understand how to develop and implement control strategies for managing occupational health risks.
  • Understand the importance of promoting a positive health and safety culture within an organisation.
  • Be able to assess the existing health and safety culture of an organisation.
  • Understand the factors that influence staff behaviour.
  • Know how to develop a strategy for improving the health and safety culture of an organisation.
  • Be able to develop and present a business case for improving the health and safety culture of an organisation.

Course Duration

  • Candidates are required to complete all the units within five years period of duration.

Course Assessment

Unit 1: Principles of Health and Safety Management

  • Assessed by a 3-hour written examination for 120 marks
    • Part A comprises one compulsory, stimulus-based question relating to a fictitious workplace and questions centered on risk management (40)
    • Part B comprises eight compulsory short-answer questions (each 10 marks)
    • For clearing this unit, candidates need to achieve 40% in each of the sections (i.e. A &B)

Unit 2: Safeguarding People’s Health in the Workplace

  • Assessed by a 2.5-hour written examination and a workplace-based assignment
    • Written examination comprises ten questions each carries ten marks (i.e. in total 100 marks )
    • Assignment is evaluated for 60 marks
    • Both written examination and assignment have equal weightage
    • 40% is required to clear this unit

Unit 3: Promoting a Positive Health and Safety Culture in the Workplace

  • Assessed by a workplace-based assignment of 84 marks
    • Pass Mark - 42

Issue of Certificates

  • British Safety Council Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health will be awarded to the candidates who have passed the assessments for all three units within a five year period
  • Based on the scoring percentage, they are graded as distinction, merit and pass
